Coastguard is an emergency service that operates 24/7, 365 days a year.  It is a registered charity that relies largely on the generosity of individual donors, corporate sponsors, trusts and community groups to enable it to continue its lifesaving work.

Here are a few interesting facts about Coastguard:

  • It is manned by approximately 2000 volunteers
  • Volunteer units are based at 63 locations around New Zealand’s major lakes, rivers and coastline
  • It has two Air Patrols, two communication centres, and 59 units with rescue vessels
  • Last year Coastguard volunteers rescued over 8,600 people and brought them home safely to their families
  • Over 83,592 volunteer hours of training took place last year
  • Volunteers dedicated a total of 291,402 hours of their personal time to safeguarding communities around Aotearoa

Why do they do all this?
